The Hohensalzburg Fortress (construction began in 1077 AD; one of the largest medieval castles in Europe) gave us our best views and best experience in Salzburg. This was our first real castle and it felt like we were in Gondor. It was also fun walking in Mozart's footsteps around the city: seeing his church and touring his house. The Alps in the distance and the winding river through the city made this a postcard-perfect city, even in January.
