We visited our local palace on Sunday. (I won't be able to say that much longer.) I love Schloss Benrath because there's a nice playground for the kids and many locals wander the grounds for recreation, which gives the gardens a carefree "day at the beach" vibe.
We were last here in August, when sunflowers and bumblebees filled the gardens. This time, we caught the beginning of flowering trees.
We brought a picnic to maximize our hours outside. Soaking up the sun in the springtime feels like a rejuvenating day at the spa. It's so much better than spending time in the hot summer sunshine, when I'm always seeking shade, sunscreen, and sweat rags. Plus, there are fewer insects around in the spring. Have I mentioned that I love spring?
We've still never stepped foot inside the actual palace. Dare I say that we've been in enough European palaces to last us a lifetime, or will I reject that idea after I've been in the US for a while?
It was with much joy that I shelved my red wool coat, signaling the true end of coldness and the continuation of the "Holly in her pink coat" series.
There were many surprises lurking in this 150-acre garden, one of which was the giant pool of mating frogs. We saw at least twenty happy couples; Daisy loved it. When do we come back to find tadpoles? Have to do some research...
"Every spring is the only spring." I came across this quote by Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter). Because of our upcoming move, this spring feels extra special to me, and I'm certainly treasuring it as if it were the one and only. I wish that I could bottle this spring...and then live in the bottle.
I'm pretty sure that, given enough time, I would regret living in a bottle of spring and eventually crave some watermelon and tomatoes, and then some apples and pumpkin. Maybe even snow. My friend recently remarked that she loved winter because one can see the distant views through the bare tree branches. I kind of like that, too. I shall be content to simply bottle up this spring to revisit later, when I look at these photographs and remember picnics at palaces.
