Euro blunders

3 very funny things happened today, our 5-year wedding anniversary, that demonstrate our newbie status here in Europe:

1) We started walking around Munich to find a restaurant off of Tuerkenstrasse, but couldn't find this street. Where we expected to see Tuerkenstrasse, we saw the sign "Einbahnstrasse." We turned around a few times until we realized that this was indeed Tuerkenstrasse, and that Einbahnstrasse really means "one-way street."

2) At a seat-yourself restaurant, our waitress spoke to us in German as we were choosing our table. Assuming she was telling us about specials or something similar, we kindly/blankly nodded as if we understood. As we pulled a chair back to sit down, it fell off of a ledge, making a rather loud crash. We then realized that our waitress had probably been telling us that this table was a poor choice.

3) Happy to find a grocery store, we loaded up our basket and checked out. After paying, the cashier moved on to the next customer, while our groceries were still lying on the table. Realizing that they were not going to bag our groceries, and that there were no bags available for us, we quickly stuffed our groceries into our backpack and carried the rest in our arms. I guess we should bring our own bags next time!

  1. Hi Holly, I loved reading this entry, ah the joys and bumps of a different culture/language. I had the same sort of thing happen in Paris with regard to the groceries. :-) I had not taken bags with me when I went to a little store by myself, so I had to carry a bunch of stuff in my arms and in my purse! haha.
Can't wait to watch the videos later tonight at home (I can't see them at work).
    Love and miss you guys!

  2. Trader Joe's told us they know who their European customers are because they always bring their own bags. We could learn a thing or two in the states from our friends in Europe!

  3. Dear Holly, Chris and Daisy,
I love the sites and sounds and anecdotes and everything.
You sound very German already...and Daisy's speech is excellent.
    Your blog is wonderful.
    Love, Gigi
