What's Average?

I am smitten with springtime. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, it begins right when it is supposed to in Western Europe and gives people plenty of time - at least two full months - to appreciate it. I have been enjoying daffodils for weeks, and the pink flowering trees are just starting to blossom. Compare this with my 9 years spent in the Midwest, when trees would blossom and tulips would be planted, and then blizzards would come, knocking down the tulips and stunting the trees. I'll never forget how my parents visited Madison once on Easter Sunday, when it snowed.

According to weather.com, here are the monthly averages in Fahrenheit of the last few places we've lived or will live. I suggest that you click on the links for the visual effect of the graphs. The differences in range are stunning.

Highlights from this table:
1) I had a reason for not understanding "seasonal wardrobes" while I was growing up in California.
2) Winter is 6 months long in Wisconsin.
3) In January, Germany's average low is warmer than Madison's average high.
4) In July, Atlanta's average low is equal to Germany's average high...they don't call it "Hotlanta" for nothin'.
5) I'm thinking of naming our next child after Willis Haviland Carrier. He invented the air conditioner.
